Origin of LHD Vauxhall
The company was founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson in Vauxhall, London. The company was initially known as Alex Wilson and Company, later as Vauxhall Iron Works, where pumps and marine engines were manufactured. A five-horsepower model, which was driven by a tiller and featured only two forward gears and no reverse gear, was developed by the company in 1903. This was followed by introducing a more advanced model that could be sold.
During the first decade of the 20th century, the company relocated most of its production to Luton to expand production. From 1907 until the company changed its name to Vauxhall Motors, it continued to trade under the name Vauxhall Iron Works. Sporting models were the company's trademark, but after the First World War, they were more austere in design.
In the thirteenth century, Fulk le Breant, a mercenary who served King John, received the Manor of Luton in return for his services. He is credited with creating the griffin emblem, which is still used today. Additionally, he acquired the right to a tract of land south of the Thames near London through marriage. Vauxhall was the name given to Fulk's Hall, the house he built. Vauxhall Iron Works' coat of arms was adopted to emphasize its connections to the locality. A griffin emblem was returning to its ancestral home when Vauxhall Iron Works relocated to Luton in 1905.
